The power of knowlege is indisputable. Without a passion for knowledge, curiosity of intellect and pursuit of the unknown, the electricity industry would not be where it is today. To this end, SMPA is committed to the education of our youth. In 1997 SMPA held the inaugural "Power of Knowledge" tournament to provide competition for mental athletes and ignite a passion for education in students.
The tournament is held annually each spring in a different location within the SMPA service territory. It is open to students in grades 3 - 12 who live or attend school within SMPA territory. Teams from across our seven county area gather for a day of written and oral competition. They compete for the top three honors in the elementary, middle school and high school division.
SMPA employees and directors, along with teachers and spectators volunteer their time to help read questions, time events and keep score.
