About Us

San Miguel Power Association, Inc. is a not-for-profit, member owned rural electric cooperative. It was established in 1938 for the purpose of supplying central station power to the rural farms and dwellings in the San Miguel Basin area, after these same people were denied service by Western Colorado Power.

SMPA consumers are considered member/owners of the cooperative. As such, they have a voice in the direction of the cooperative, through their democratically elected representative. The SMPA Board of Directors is composed of seven elected officials who are charged with the responsibility of representing the needs and interests of all the members within their district. Members can also voice their comments directly to the General Manager and at the Annual Meeting held every June.

SMPA's core business is built around providing the electricity that our members need. But for us, it means much more than that. Our daily actions are driven by our mission, vision and core values. At SMPA, employees are service oriented with you - the member - as our first priority.

Mission: The Mission of San Miguel Power Association, Inc. is to demonstrate corporate responsibility and community service while providing our members safe, reliable, cost effective and environmentally responsible electrical service.

Vision: To be a viable cooperative model for sustainability, responsibility, financial strength, integrity, democracy, employee and member satisfaction, energy efficiency, conservation, renewable energy, education and communication, while maintaining reliable electrical service.

Who is Tri-State? Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association is a wholesale electric power supplier owned by the 44 electric cooperatives that it serves. SMPA is one of those cooperatives. Tri-State generates and transports electricity to its member systems throughout a 250,000 square-mile service territory across Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico and Wyoming.

Just as SMPA is owned by the members it serves, so is Tri-State. That means each of their 44 cooperatives has one representative that sits on the Tri-State Board of Directors. Those directors are given the responsibility of setting the course for the future of Tri-State.
